As we come to an end of January 2021, we take a look at some of the songs from Nigerian artists that ruled the airwaves this month featuring singles from Omah Lay, new diva Ayra Starr, a collaboration between Wizkid and Burna Boy and another one from Yemi Alade and Rudeboy as well as Davido and Joeboy.

Deceive – Yemi Alade ft Rudeboy

‘Deceive’ is a song off Yemi Alade’s fifth studio album ‘Empress’ that she released in November 2020.

In the song that features singer Rudeboy, Yemi Alade used to address marriage challenges. The song has been among the trending songs in January 2021, thanks to its official music video released on December 23, 2020.

The video directed by award-winning Clarence Peters has over 6.5 million views on YouTube, currently.

Jowo – Davido

‘Jowo’ is among the best performing songs from Davido’s ‘A Better Time’ album and has enjoyed massive airplay this January.

The American-born Nigerian singer released its official music video early in December and to date, it has been watched over 11 million times on YouTube.

Away – Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr is a new diva in the Naija music industry and although she was introduced to the world a few weeks into January 2021, she has already built a fan-base that is arguably growing fast.

The Mavin Records teenager was introduced by dropping an EP, a self-titled 5-track project that came with an official music video for one of the singles ‘Away’ that has performed relatively well.

Lonely – Joeboy

Joeboy is preparing to drop his debut album ‘Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic’ on February 4 and one of the songs housed in the 15-track project is ‘Lonely’.

‘Lonely’ has been among the trending songs this January and was boosted by the release of an official music video on January 18.

The video was shot in Lagos by Nigerian director Adetula “KingTula” Adebowale and follows the story of two shy neighbours who suddenly realize their mutual interest in one another.

Ginger – Wizkid ft Burna Boy

This is a super collaboration that has been trending for months now – since Wizkid released his ‘Made in Lagos’ album on October 30, 2020.

The song has enjoyed massive airplay across multiple traditional media and digital music platforms, with its popularity boosted by the release of an official music video early in January 2021.

Currently, the ‘Ginger’ video has over 4.5 million views on YouTube.

Godly – Omah Lay

Off ‘What Have We Done’ EP, a second project that Omah Lay released in 2020, ‘Godly’ has been the best performing single.

The song spent several weeks on multiple charts on Radio, Digital and TV platforms and has an official music video released on December 18, 2020, with a current tally of over 7.2 million views on YouTube.
