The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has released a disheartening report on the little benefits artistes get from streaming their music on various online platforms.

NACZ recently conducted a survey to establish consumption trends of music from these platforms and appallingly, only 8% of Zimbabwean artistes made more than US$500 from their music being streamed on music platforms in 2019.

68% of the artistes got absolutely nothing. According to the report, 34% of Zimbabweans head to streaming platforms to listen to music while another 6 per cent listen via CDs.

“Musicians seem to lag behind consumers in moving online as 15 percent of Zimbabwean musicians still do not have their music available on any streaming platform. Of those who do stream their music, 77 percent utilise the YouTube platform,” she said.

When it comes to YouTube which is a free streaming service, there is a 78% population of consumers while only 27% have a subscription for music streaming.

The survey commissioned in October took in 363 responses, from which 357 were valid. Camarra said it could lean more to urban dwellers, perhaps due to the fact that the urban population heavily consumes music.
