South Africa continues to fight race inequality as a result of the apartheid regime two and a half decades after independence and Ami Faku is putting it into perspective with her new single ‘Imali’ featuring Blaq Diamond.

‘Imali’ is a single that highlights the unequal wealth distribution, along racial lines in South Africa. As part of their song description, Ami Faku and Blaq Diamond state, “"South Africa is the most unequal country in the world" - Time Magazine. 31.8 million people live in poverty. The White minority makes up the richest 10% of the population owning 86% of the Wealth in South Africa. The Bottom 90% Mainly African People have 14% of the Money in South Africa in 2020.”

The single is meant to be thought provoking and the producer made sure of that; it has a very minimalistic beat which only gets busier at the chorus and even then, there is close to zero layering with the instrumentation. This keeps the vocals by Ami and the Blaq Diamond duo sounding very raw which brings a richness to the song.

The video is shot in South Africa and it takes on some rich earthy colours. The video takes us through the streets giving us a glimpse of black people working to earn their living. The video is keen on keeping the intensity of the audio alive with close-up shots, slow stills through the video and the statements at the very beginning.

South Africa and Africa as a whole has a long way to go to achieve some sort of equality. Catch a vibe with Ami Faku and Blaq Diamond on ‘Imali’.
