The Kenyan music industry is very diverse, and has a lot of artistes that focus on different genres.

Over the years, music lovers have seen several music groups formed by artistes that shared a common goal, only for the groups to break up after some time.

Most of these artistes always do well in the groups, but struggle to make it once the group collapses.

A number of artistes have, however, managed to make it big after parting ways with their groups. This article looks at three Kenyan musicians who’ve made it big as solo artistes after their groups split:

1. Sanaipei Tande

She is arguably one of the best vocalists and karaoke hosts in Kenya. In the early 2000s, she was a member of the Sema group that also featured; Pam Waithaka, and Kevin Waweru. The trio rose to fame in 2004 after emerging winners of the Coca Cola Pop Stars talent search.

Later that year, the trio dropped their hit single ‘Leta Wimbo’, and an album which endeared them to music lovers. The group, however, parted ways in 2005, with all the members pursuing solo careers.

Sana got a job on radio, but later left to pursue a career in the arts industry.  Her risk paid off and she managed to drop massive singles, and feature on several collaborations.

Some of her top songs include; Amina, Mdaka Mdakiwa, Chaguo la Moyo and Aiyana with Otile Brown, Ankula Huu, Kwaheri with Jua Cali among others.

2. Nyashinski

Kleptomaniax music group was formed in 1999, and was made up of; Collo, Nyashinski and Roba. The group was one of the most followed in the country and had top hits like; Freak It, Manian Anthem, Haree, Tuendelee among others.

They had an amazing run, but unfortunately parted ways in 2009, with each opting to pursue a solo career. Following the split, Nyashinski travelled abroad where he stayed until 2016, when he travelled back too Kenya and made a major comeback in the industry.

After jetting back, Nyashinski dropped massive tunes that include; Now you Know, Mungu Pekee, Malaika, Aminia, Free, Bebi Bebi among others. Thanks to these hits, he was able to reclaim his spot among top Kenyan Hip-hop musicians.

Currently, he is one of the biggest artistes in the country and recently dropped his new album dubbed ‘Lucky You’.

3. Moji Short Baba

In 2009, the Kenyan gospel music industry was blessed with an amazing group dubbed ‘Kelele Takatifu’ made up of; Moji Short Babaa and Didi. The group released amazing songs like; Bamba Mbaya, Ni Msoo, and Ngori among others. At the height of their success, the two decided to part ways, and pursue solo careers. This news disappointed their fans who enjoyed their music.

After parting ways, Moji went big, dropping several songs like; Kuzitoka, Vimbada, Pekee Yangu, Mitumba, Unabore, Wacha Story among others. These hits propelled him to be one of the best gospel musicians in the country.
