Earlier this month, Ugandan artiste Desire Luzinda ignited an online debate when she claimed that gospel artistes in the country were not having online concerts due to lack of support from churches.

According to her, pastors have constantly ignored gospel artistes especially during this lock down when they are not working or performing anywhere.

"When it comes to concerts, while companies come out to sponsor secular artistes you will never hear of churches supporting their own. When it comes to concerts, Invitations are free thank you for honoring the invitation pastors but what is your contribution to the artiste?! Don't get me wrong this is not in any way an attack on the church but where is the impact of the church on the industry? Does this mean we have no Christian televisions?" Desire posed.

She further noted that many gospel artistes end up running away from gospel music because of lack of support from the church.

Reacting to Desire remarks, popular gospel artiste Pastor Wilson Bugembe advised her not be money minded, or compete with secular artistes because both worlds are different.

He said if they go with this narrative, they would backslide. This did not go well with Desire who in turn questioned why the pastor was charging entrance fees at his shows, yet he is not money minded.

"If it is not for money, why are his shows not free? Papa Wilson Bugembe, I am not disrespecting you sir or your thought but my call was for general support of the gospel industry," Desire said.
