Dance hall female artist Cindy Sanyu is not happy with the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS), for what she terms as ‘abandoning artists’ in these hard times.

According to Cindy, UPRS, a collecting society in Uganda mandated to collect royalties on behalf of audio and visual rights owners should come out and help artistes during this period while their shows are still on hold.

This debate was ignited by renowned TV presenter MC Ibrah who called upon UPRS to give back the artisets all their savings.

"It is high time you get the money and give these artistes because UPRS acts as their SACCO. In this period, UPRS and URSB should give these artistes back their money. The government of Kenya compensated their artistes, we shall exempt our government but we ask the group that is responsible for collecting money from our artistes to give it back. You pretend to be shutting down bars, lodges, ceremonies all in the name of collecting artistes’ money. They need it now,” he said.

Re-sharing the video, Cindy accused UPRS of pirating their music and selling it all over the world.

"The same people who are supposed to collect royalties for the artistes and also fight piracy are the ones pirating our music and selling it all over the world." Cindy said.

The Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) was formed in 1985 by authors (mainly musicians) to advance the cause of copyright administration in Uganda.

It is registered with the Registrar of Companies as a Company Limited by Guarantee having no share capital as it belongs to all of its members.
