Wanavokali Win The Old Mutual Amazing Voices Season 1

Old Mutual called for auditions late last year for a music show that showcases the amazing raw voices in Africa that are yet to be signed. The show was dubbed ‘Old Mutual Amazing Voices’. The show was taking contestants from Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe; 9 cities from these countries.

In Kenya, the auditions were held on the 8^th of October with Sanaipei Tande and Kavutha Mwanzia Asiyo as the selectors. Kenya had three representatives but only two who were managed to travel due to visa complications; Wanavokali, Solid Rock band and Duaro Harmonies (who could not travel).

The 13 week show that was happening in South Africa was won by Kenyan group Wanavokali.

Wanavokali are a Kenyan acapella group who caught people’s attention with their rendition of Nyashinski’s hit single, ‘Malaika’. They are a group of 6 vocalists who met at Safaricom Twaweza Live as background vocalists. The 6 vocalists are Ythera, Riki Msanii, Chepkorir, Lena Gayah, Rui and Mellah.

Wanavokali won a whopping 100,000 USD after the completion of the Old Mutual’s Amazing Voices season 1.
