We all know that Zzero Sufuri was raised by a pastor despite him introducing himself to us as a gengetone artist and one who loves his blunt. He has now tapped into his growing up in church courtesy of his new single ‘Bwana wa Mabwana’.

‘Bwana wa Mabwana’ is a sample of the well-known Swahili church hymn ‘Bwana wa mabwana leo ainuliwe, Bwana wa mabwana ainuliwe’. He actually uses this song for the first hook to introduce us to the song. The chorus is a sample of another Swahili church hymn, ‘Baba, mi nakupenda, asante sana Baba, Mwokozi wangu…’

The single, produced by Kovx Wise is a great bop. It is a great fusion of old school kapuka and that is clear with the bop feel to the song. There is the gengetone feel from the bass and the progression of the bass tones to the song. There is also a melody provided by a guitar in the background which brings all the softness to the song.

Zzero showcases his rapping and singing skills interchangeably and he has mastered that well. He sings his own chorus in a raspy and lazy voice with a lot of rough edges which really is beautiful; kind of reminds you of Ja Rule trying to sing.

We are definitely experiencing a new side to Zzero and we are here for it. Catch a vibe with Zzero Sufuri on ‘Bwana wa Mabwana’.
