2019 was definitely the year of Burna Boy and everyone in Africa and especially Nigeria is happy with King Burna represent the continent.
He began the year 2019 teasing the release of a new album. He was however riding on the wave of his EP courtesy of the songs ‘Ye’ and ‘Gbona’. He started getting the international buzz and the whole world was listening to king Burna. His contemporary twist on Fela kuti’s style and even sampling his music has now made Burna Boy the reference point to what Afro-beat means.
He was featured on Beyonce’s Lion King album and just before we thought he was done, he released his fire album ‘African Giant’ a week later. African Giant shook the entertainment industry within Africa and internationally. It charted at number 1 on various streaming platforms for weeks, even ahead of Beyonce’s Lion King album. The world had no other option but to stan a true African Giant.
Burna Boy went on to win a BET Award for the best African Act. Mama Burna received the award on his behalf and shook the black community with her short but powerful speech. Months later, Burna Boy has now been nominated for a Grammy Award. This is set to happen on the 26th of January so essentially, his 2020 is also starting out alright.
At the end of every year, Barack Obama releases a list of his favourite music and end of 2019, he did exactly. On the list was Burna Boy’s hit single ‘Anybody’. Really a case of a black king stanning an African Giant.
I wouldn’t know what Burna has in store for his fans in 2020 but really, 2020 might also be his big year when he bags that Grammy and other awards.
