The Soul Train Awards happened over the past weekend and a lot of things have emerged from then and happened. You know, people won and others lost; some felt like the essence of soul music was watered down that night into mainstream music. One of the people who were not too pleased was ‘Ari Lennox’.

Soul music was essentially music for the soul. It was created by the African American community in the 1960s. It combined elements of African American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Soul music became popular during the civil rights movement and later on influenced rock music.

Ari Lennox was nominated in a couple of categories; Best Collaboration, Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and Album/Mixtape of the Year. She however lost in all these categories. Ari had time and she took time to address her frustrations.

Ari Lennox felt that her album Shea Butter Baby was one of the most soulful albums there is of this decade. She felt like the Soul Train Awards took a more mainstream subjective approach to awarding the projects and that is how she might have ended up losing in maybe all her categories.

Some people of the internet thought that she was being entitled on her socials. However, she took time to remind people that all she was trying to point out is that these awards, including Soul Train are now having a leaning into mainstream more than real music.

Ari has since deleted all these tweets but I guess we all might see some truth to what Ari was trying to point out.
