How Promoters Make a Kill from Conning Artists

King of Genge Jua Cali has recently shared his struggle of being conned by a promoter as he started in music. This only brings up a myriad of stories about artists who have been swindled in their line of work.

The list of events that have been a flop in Kenya probably outgrow a scroll.  Most of the time, simply blamed on a rogue promoter. The most recent being Tomorrow’s Leaders Festival organized by Morgan Heritage, that had a great line up with highly influential artists from all over Africa.

It sadly has begun to establish a trend with most concerts hosted in Kenya. Fans sacrifice time and money to have a feel of their favourite artists’ performance; only to be met with a half baked concert or a complete no show of the artist.

Con promoters is also one of the biggest discouragements for upcoming artists. Nadia clearly states it in her  hit song ‘Si Rahisi’ ‘Promoter bandia kunipa show, kisha jioni apotee…’

Rick Ross, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Akothee, Nyashinki are all influential artists who have called out fraud promoters. These are only the well known names, so it is only left to imagination, what artists trying to come up are going through.

Jua Cali came forward through a web- series dubbed Janjaruka Series. The build up towards it’s release on 14th August,2019 has been marked by con story  releases from a number of entertainment personalities under the tag #MyConStory. The series  intends to spark a conversation about Con Culture in Nairobi.
