KFCB boss Ezekiel Mutua brands ‘Taka Taka’ song as garbage & degrading towards women

Kenya Film and Classification Board Boss has today (16.04.19) banned viral Kenyan song ‘Taka Taka’ by Alvindo.

The regulatory board has banned the song, due to its obscene and degrading lyrics that advocate for violence against women by equating them to trash. The ban comes a few days after the news of several women being killed and others injured by their partners for one reason or another.

“As a Board, we note with great concern that the recent past has been characterized by numerous deaths of girls in love triangles. It is regrettable that such incidences are fanned to fame by media content such as this. Men must learn to respect female members of society. The song is characterized by crude language that objectifies women and glorifies hurting them as a normal reaction to rejection,” said Mutua in a statement.

The Board notes that the song was not submitted for examination and classification. As such, it contravenes Section 12 (2) of the Films and Stage Plays Act.

The controversial moral police in his statement to newsrooms highlighted some of the lyrics to the 2018 song, “Nakuroga unakufa…Roho chafu kama ya shetani…Nakuja Kwa mazishi yako kukula na kukunywa nikucheke ukizikwa. Noting that the lyrics are primitive and abuse our sensibilities as a people, they cannot be condoned and that should not be celebrated in any way by society.

The board has banned the song which has over 1M views from being played on all free to air TV and radio stations in Kenya and has ordered the immediate takedown of the song from all online platforms. Moreover, the song should also not be played on at any club or entertainment joint in Kenya and it has been pointed out that DJs found to be playing the song shall be prosecuted. The board further ordered the singer to avail himself at the KFCB offices within 14 days otherwise he shall be prosecuted.

The statement lastly added, “We must take art seriously as a tool for shaping the values and character of our children. Obscenity is not our way of life and must be not be promoted or condoned by members of society. We must discard the misguided notion that content has to be dirty to sell”.
