‘We Are One’ makers join Mdundo, happy about their music in Kenya

As Mdundo keeps spreading its wings across the world, we are happy to have our latest new addition to the family, Dutch band Chef ‘Special.

The five member band who describe their music as pop with a mixture of hip-hop influences, recently collaborated with Kenya’s Octopizzo and Ugandan rapper Dr Eppy and created We Are One, a song dedicated to all Kenyans and Africa in general encouraging oneness.

The song was recorded early this year but was not released until the start of September, which amazingly coincided with the #WeAreOne campaign by Kenyans to help victims of the Westgate Mall attack.

“To work with Octopizzo and Dr Eppy was such a great experience for us. They are both very nice guys with a professional attitude,” they told Mdundo.

On how the song cam to be, they said, “We met at the Sarakasi dome through a Dutch lady known as Marion Van Dijck and it is here where the whole song got conceptualized. The message that Octo and Eppy wanted to put in this song is that the Kenyan people are one no matter what their political preference, religion or race is, and that those differences should never get in the way of living peacefully amongst each other.”

Chef Special was formed in 2008 after they bought an old van to tour the coasts of France and Spain. They would perform in return for food and a place to sleep.

In the years that followed they developed their music and recorded their first album "One for the Mrs" that created a foundation for them as artists.

“We didn't know Octo before we came to Kenya and it was kind of funny for us to slowly find out about his popularity. When we were shooting the video at a certain point in Kibera he was mobbed by children and other fans that wanted to talk to him or shake hands. We found out he is an inspirational figure for a lot of people,” Chef Special.

The band is set to release their second album in February next year and are happy about their music in Kenya.

“We are very happy and proud that our music is now also in Kenya. When we release our second album we hope that Kenyans will like it.”
