KENYA: 'Don't Depend on MCSK Royalties', Words of Wisdom From One of the Highest Earning Artists in Kenya

Ever since music sensation group Elani spoke about the alleged MCSK misdemeanors, many artists have joined the band wagon to support the call for transparency at the music body.

Many of them have even gone online to share the ridiculously low royalty cheques they got at the end of the year from the MCSK.

But now hit maker Jaguar who is also coincidentally one of the highest paid artists by the MCSK has come out with perhaps some harsh words for all those who’ve been complaining about low earnings from MCSK.

The ‘Matapelli’ artist said that he’s not been to MCSK to collect royalties since the year 2013, this is despite the fact he was the music copyright group’s highest earning artist in 2014.

“I totally support a transparent and accountable MCSK in order for Kenyan Musicians to get their hard earned royalties. To the few alluding that I may perhaps be a beneficiary, I want to state that I have not been to MCSK to collect Royalties since the year 2013... MCSK can clarify further,” he wrote.

Jaguar went on to say that royalties are only one avenue out of many for artists to make money from music.

“I'd like to urge upcoming Kenyan musicians not to be discouraged by the ongoing wrangles with the copyright societies. In music there are many ways one can earn and be successful. Royalties is just one of the avenues.” Jaguar concluded.
