Happy day, oh, happy day! I may not be an artist, but I’m ever excited whenever the billing periods taste the air and like always every artist on Mdundo gets an equal piece of cake. If you've updated your payment information on Mdundo then between tomorrow the 1st of July and the 15th of the same, you should be licking your fingers from the revenue that comes your way.
Artist benefit from free music
Music fans have downloaded 2million free songs, earning the music industry 1.2 million Kenyan Shillings.
From foundation Mdundo.com has been an organization driven to change the music industry for the better in not only Kenya but Africa as a whole, and as such has come up with different strategies to make this happen.
The best of these strategies is paying musicians for giving their music out for free.
Mdundo Head of Music and Operations Manager, Thiru Mungai says, “It’s been a struggle for musicians to make money by monetizing their music and after getting a lot of feedback from our artists, we came up with ways to make sure they make something out of the fruits of their labor.”
The benefit of this is seen clearly by the growth of the artist numbers on the site with over 100 artists signing up on the platform on a weekly basis.
Mdundo.com artist Frasha says “Mdundo has not only given the seasoned musician a platform to distribute their music but also for upcoming artist to earn something, even if little, from their downloads.”
Last year, Mdundo Music paid out 1.6 million Kenya shillings whereas in the first half of 2015 year alone they are already paying out at 1.2 million Kenya Shillings
“This is a large growth in comparison to the same time last year where we paid 700,000 Kenya shillings. And advertisers are beginning to see the reach that Mdundo.com has for their consumers.” Mdundo CEO, Martin Nielsen stated.
With this strategy Mdundo.com aims to fight piracy in the music industry, 65 percent of the users on the platform would be downloading illegal music, now that the music is available for free on the site.
