What is Rock music and where did it come from?

Rock music originated from the popular ‘rock and roll' from the United States. It reportedly came into existence in the late 1940s and 1950s. It was created by borrowing different aspects from several genres including; country music, blues, jazz, electric blues and African-American music. While most popular genres are mainly covered by solo artists, rock is mostly done by bands with four or more artists as it incorporates several beats from different instruments that include; electric bass, guitars and drums.

Since its inception in the 40s, the genre has been on an upward trend, spreading its wings to countries outside the United States. Britain played a key role in the development of this genre as many bands that have since become popular in the world emanated from the United Kingdom. The bands include; The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, The Who, The Police, Black Sabbath, The Clash, The Smiths, Queen, The Cure and The Kinks among others.

While rock started as a single genre, it has developed and brought about several sub-genres with distinct elements but all of which trace back their roots to the original sound. The sub-genres of rock that have since emerged include; roots, indie, christian, chicano, glam, hard, soft, heartland and pop-punk among others.
For close to 70 years, rock was one of the most popular genres in the world, but it started facing a decline after other other sounds like Hip-hop, trap and reggae among others gained popularity especially among the youth. From around 2010, it started facing a decline in mainstream popularity with the climax coming in 2017 when it was overtaken by Hip-hop as the most listened to genre in America.

Despite the drop in popularity, several rock artists and bands still managed to remain relevant and hold the genre afloat. The bands and artists include; Tool band, Twenty One Pilots, The Man, Panic at the Disco, Walk the Moon, Disturbed, The Black Keys, Avenged Sevenfold and Greta Van Fleet among others.

In football, there is a popular saying that goes “form is temporary but class is permanent.” This was proved by rock as it disappointed critics and made a strong comeback in the year 2020. The comeback was orchestrated by a new generation of pop-punk artists that include; Willow Smith, Olivia Rodrigo, Trippie Redd, Halsey, Machine Gun Kelly and Yungblud among others. These artists created music that resonated with the youth.
The resurgence of rock, specifically the pop-punk subgenre is also credited to social media that has become a huge avenue for marketing. Tiktok in particular is believed to have created curiosity and interest in the genre from the youth during the corona-virus pandemic. During this time, pop-punk songs performed exceptionally well on streaming platforms. For example; Tickets to My Downfall album by Machine Gun Kelly topped Billboard’s top 200. At the same time, Olivia Rodrigo's viral hit ‘Good 4 U’ also ranked high on the chats.
