Why Popular English Singer Ed Sheeran is Being Sued For More Than Ksh200 Million

It’s been a quick rise to fame for British singer Ed Sheeran who not more than a 6 years ago was a struggling artist trying to get his big break.

Now two songwriters have come out to sue the singer for more than $20 million (that’s more than Ksh200 million) after alleging that Sheeran’s 2015 hit song ‘Photograph’ bears a "striking similarity" to a song they penned for a onetime winner of The X Factor, according to multiple reports.

The song writers identified as Martin Harrington and Tom Leonard who filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on Wednesday 8, June 2016, claim that Sheeran’s song resembles to a 2012 song released by British singer Matt Cardle, who won the seventh season of X Factor.

Now they’re seeking for a jury trial and damages in excess of $20 million and royalties from the song.

The two point specifically to the chorus of ‘Photograph’ saying it shares 39 identical notes with Cardle's "Amazing".

They also claim the two songs utilize similar overall structures, melodic rhythms and harmonies. Included in the court documents is a side-by-side comparison of the written composition of the songs. (People)

Co-defendants in the suit include "Photograph" co-writer and Snow Patrol pianist and guitarist Johnny McDaid, as well as several music publishers and the record label, Warner Music Group.
