Three top Ghanaian artists, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale have been nominated for this year’s International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) edition.
While rapper Sarkodie’s historic “Black Love” virtual concert held last year during the lockdown has earned him a nod in the “Best Virtual Showcase/Concert” category, Dancehall star Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy were listed in the “Best African Dancehall Entertainer”.
The competition is said to be a tough one as the Ghanaian entertainers will be competing against other giant entertainers from other countries. Sarkodie will be competing with “Beenie Man vs Bounty Verzuz Battle”, “Rebel Salute” and “Reggae Sumfest” for the gong, and Shata Wale and Stonebwoy will compete with Buffalo Souljah (South Africa), Patoranking (Nigeria) and Winky D (Zimbabwe) for the plaque.
Another Ghanaian nominee Dj Switch is expected to be competing with DJ Whitney, Kailash and Wayne J. She is the youngest disc jockey and the youngest winner of Ghana DJ Awards’ “DJ of the Year”, received a nod in the “Best Young Entertainer (18 years and under)” category.
The IRAWMA concert is set to take place on Sunday, May 2, 2021, in Jamaica under the theme “Reggae & World Music Still Rise”. Other notable acts from neighboring countries who have received the same nominations are Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid in the “Best Afrobeat Entertainer” category and will compete with Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania) and Master KG (South Africa).
