Zambia Needs An Interparty Economic - published by farky bezy

Content:: Zambia Needs An Interparty Economic
Development Forum.
President Edgar Lungu, as Head of
State, must use the Constitutional
powers vested in him to steer Zambia
to greater heights by prioritising
economic development. The current
Interparty dialogue is a sheer waste of
time as it does not represent the
interests of an ordinary Zambian. It's
all about political power struggle.
An Interparty Economic Development
Forum (IEDF) initiative would be
chaired by the ruling party with the
sole purpose of reconciling economic
development initiatives by the various
political parties and table them in
cabinet for consideration. Over time,
priorities change and such meetings
would help identify areas that may
need readjusting.
Let's look at the area of mining, for
instance. While it's true that mining is
a very capital intensive venture
requiring huge capital investment, we
cannot say this is true about all the
minerals. Can the IDC fail to manage
an Emerald mine? Let's look at how
such a venture would help Zambia
settle the so much talked about
external debt.
An Emerald that weighs 1.50 carats
with an "Exceptional" tone and
saturation category is priced at $
10,000 to $18,000 per carat. 1.50 by $
10,000 gives us $15,000 for low retail,
and $27,000 as the high retail price.
1kg is 5000 carats, so mining such a
prized 1kg stone of the same grade
would fetch $50m for low retail, and $
90m as high retail.
From this simple illustration, one can
tell that we are spending our energies
on wrong and, for lack of a better
word, stupid political dialogue instead
of focusing on progressive fora that
prioritise poverty alleviation. Politics
should not be a self preservation tool
but a vehicle for development.
Zambia can develop in a period of 10
years with a correct political system
in place that prioritises economic
development and not the current
Interparty system based on western
homogeneous cultures. It's just a
perfect recipe for bickering and
directionless political statements.
To that effect, we are preparing a
governance system proposal for
consideration by government.
