Real Madrid was founded on March 6, 1902, by a group of students at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, led by Juan Padrós. Originally named Madrid Football Club, the team played its first match on December 13 of that year, against FC Barcelona. The two clubs have since developed a fierce rivalry that is still one of the biggest in football.
