About Efya

Talented Ghanaian singer Efya has all great things to say about her upbringing in Kumasi. She was born on April 10, 1990, in Ghana’s second most populated city after the capital Accra. Born Jane Awindor, she schooled at Yaa Asantewaa Secondary before heading to the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) film school in Accra.

However, her mother Nana Adwoa Awindor had an added task while raising her. She voice coached her daughter and did so excellently given her creative professional background. She was a TV host of the famous show Greetings from abroad. In 2008, Efya graduated from the University of Ghana with a degree in theatre and music. This was the beginning of her music career.

She auditioned and competed in a musical show, Charterhouse's Stars of The Future where she emerged second. However, she managed to wow Ghanaians and became so popular thereafter. The runners up position came with a three-year recording deal in which she collaborated with the competition’s winner Irene Logan. Her first collaborative album titled ‘Unveiled’ debuted in South Africa since Charterhouse's recording label is based there. As expected, it gave her mileage in the industry especially because she collaborated with Irene but when the deal lapsed, she was a free bird flying on her own as a solo artist.

Efya embarked on a solo music career in early 2011 and would perform in Accra and Kumasi. She recounts that this solo journey helped her reinvent herself and one of the things she did besides picking her popular stage name was singing a recording deal with One Nation Entertainment the same year. Then, she already had a significant fan base so her label was only amplifying what she had built.

It is around this time that she came up with a uniquely distinct sound blending Afrobeat with RnB. She assertively placed herself as an Afro-RnB artist whose melodies are not only irresistible but charming as well. By romantically praising an art form so rigorous in its rhythm and drum melodies as Afrobeats, the ‘Best in Me’ hitmaker establishes a completely fresh sound in every piece of work she releases.

Her musical art is based on sounds from her native Ghana, including Highlife, R'n'B, and Jazz, with musical influences ranging from Whitney Houston to Highlife legend Daddy Lumba. She is a master of the beat without sacrificing the heart of the genre by giving it a soulful melodic sweetness that fine-tunes the sound and inspires a whole new genre, AfroRnB.

She released ‘TINT’ her first mixtape in 2013 as an acronym for ‘This is Not The Album’. It was a compilation of her songs between 2011 and 2013. It is a love-themed mixtape but highlights the lows and pains of life. Some of the popular hits in this mixtape include ‘Getaway’, ‘Best in Me’, and ‘Body’.

Then, in 2016, she released her debut album ‘Janesis’ – another astounding album with colours of love came through. It was inspired by her life experiences. The Ghanaian crooner has collaborated with huge West African acts such as Sarkodie, Mr Eazi, Wizkid among others. Depending on the mood she's in and who she's working with, her voice might change in pitch and volume. It was this same year that she signed with Starboy Entertainment by Wizkid.
