Who is Neyma?

Neyma is a well-known artist from Mozambique whose interest in music started at a tender age, singing at major events in and around Maputo. Until the end of 2019, Neyma was an ambassador for United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Mozambique.

Neyma made her television debut as a contestant in the singing competition called Fantasia, where she finished in second place. Her breakthrough came in 1999 with the release of Brigas, her debut studio album for a major label, which included the hit singles "Brigas," "Mae virtude más bela," and the well-received single "Praia feliz." She released Baila in 2000 and Renascer in 2001 as a result of Brigas' success. Neyma's 2005 album Arromba cemented her reputation as a prominent vocalist from Mozambique and the Lusophone region.

She released Arromba in the summer of 2005; which became her breakthrough album and to date more than 40,000 copies were sold in Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, and Cape Verde. In the album, she features the self-titled, "Arromba" a kizomba-styled song. Another successful hit from the album was Lirandzo, which ended up being the most-played song of the year. "Arromba" ended up being the summer anthem of 2005.

Neyma went back into the studio to begin work on a new album at the beginning of 2006. She released Idiomas in the latter part of 2006, with Mbilo Yanga serving as the album's first song.

She combined Marrabenta, Coupé-Décalé, Kizomba, and traditional Mozambican rhythms on this album to produce a distinctive sound. She was reintroduced to the international music scene with Mbilo Yanga, a Kizomba song for which she won multiple nominations. Other well-known hits from the album include Te Amo, a Kizomba-Balade style, Xilhamaliso, Nunawanga Yuwi, and Marrido do Dono.

She released her sixth album in early 2010, with the working title Neyma 10 Anos in honour of her ten years in the Mozambican music business.

The songster ranks among the most celebrated musicians in the history of the Mozambican music industry. Her contribution to the growth of the industry and its elevation to the continental and global scale is notable. Her music has been celebrated in different fashions and versions mainly through awards and commendations. She also serves as a role model to many upcoming music stars who dream of taking over the music scene with their talents.
