Who is Professor Jay?
Joseph Haule, popularly known by his stage name Professor Jay is a veteran Tanzanian rapper. He was born on 29th December 1975 to the family of the late Mzee Leonard Stephen Haule at Songea, Tanzania. Professor Jay ventured into music IN around 1989 as a member of a band called Hard Blasters. At the time he identified himself as Nigga J. In 1990, the band was awarded he Best Hip Hop group in Tanzania thanks to their viral hit song ‘Chemsha Bongo’.

After a successful run with the band, the rapper left to become an independent artist. Around 2001, Professor Jay started releasing his solo projects which were received warmly by fans. What made his songs outstanding was the fact that he addressed subjects that the average Tanzanian citizen experienced. For instance, in his song dubbed ‘Ndio Mzee, the rapper addresses the fake promises that politicians make to the citizens during campaigns.

The rapper released his debut album titled ‘Machozi, Jasho na Damu’ in 2001. In 2003, he went ahead to release his second album ‘Mapinduzi Halisi’. The two albums gave the rapper fame and numerous accolades . He not only earned the respect of various stakeholders in Tanzania including top politicians but also cemented his status as one of the influential musicians.

Other albums that the rapper produced were; 'J.O.S.E.P.H' in 2006, 'Aluta Continua' in 2007, 'Izack Mangesho' in 2014, and 'Kazi Kazi' in 2016.

In 2015, he contested in the parliamentary race of Mikumi and emerged the winner under CHADEMA party. In 2022, the rapper failed to secure his seat and lost to Dennis Lazaro from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM|).

Professor Jay is credited for being one of the artists responsible for the birth and growth of the Bongo Flava genre. Despite being in the industry for such a long time, the rapper has managed to maintain his relevancy and continues to be outstanding even in the new generation. He has achieved his relevancy by being flexible and working with new musicians such as Young Lunya, and Maua Sama among others.

Among the top recognition he has received are; the 2004 Kilimanjaro Music Awards - Best Hip Hop Album for 'Mapinduzi Halisi', 2006 Tanzania Music Awards - Best Song for 'Nikusaidiaje', 2006 Kisima Music Awards - Best Tanzanian Song for 'Nikusaidiaje', 2007 Kisima Music Awards - Best Ugandan Song for 'Sivyo Ndiviyo' ft Chameleone, 2007 Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM Awards) - Best Male Artist in Tanzania, 2009 Tanzania Music Awards - Best Songwriter
