About Crayon

There is no doubt that Crayon is among the finest Afropop artists Nigeria has. He was born on November 21, 2000, in Lagos although he traces his roots to Ebonyi state. At 21, he has outdone himself, many would argue.
However, this young Nigerian artist born Charles Chibuezechukwu always had an affinity for music. At eight years old, he knew what he wanted and even wrote his lyrics. By a fit of luck, he met Ozedikus, a renowned producer who was taken aback by Crayon’s excellent mastery of music at his age.

His meeting Ozedikus, a revered record producer who has produced ‘Corny’ by Rema’ gave him more musical impetus. He was at the time in the studio and the producer heard him. Since then, his notebooks became a safe haven for his ‘to-be’ artistic career. His school books were full of lyrics and he kept it a closely-guarded secret.

Year after year, the young singer sharpened his wit and dreamed big. As luck would have it, he connected with Baby Fresh, who heard his past songs and was impressed. He signed Crayon to his label, Blowtime Entertainment as a pioneer artist. It was a huge step for Crayon who intentionally kept off writing his University exam for the love of music. While his family thought that he failed the entry exams, he would later disclose that he did what he did on purpose.

He is on record explaining that he had met Baby Fresh and the legendary Don Jazzy before sitting for his University entry exam. He had nothing to lose by looking the other way in 2019 when he signed his contract with Blowtime Entertainment, a division of Don Jazzy's Mavins recording label. The ‘So Fine’ hitmaker dropped his debut EP ‘Cray Cray’ which caused ripples in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

This wasn’t enough to build him a solid base nonetheless. But this song ‘So Fine’ which followed his EP broke musical seams. The plot of "So Fine" revolves around the endearing promises made by a man to his lady love. In spite of the triteness of the subject matter, the 21-year-old musician's lovely voice perfectly hits the beat. His music is bubbly, an art he took from Drake, Wiz Kid, Davido, Bryson Tiller, Fela, Drake and Justin Bieber who inspire him.

The bubbly nature of Crayon’s hits stems from the intricate elements he employs in his music. You can always pick the ‘Pop’ and local groove in all his hits. Crayon has done fairly well in Afropop and Afrobeat so to speak. His songwriting is captivating and imaginative too but it is how he brings it out that matters most. It explains why big acts like Rema, Don Jazzy, and Ladipoe couldn’t resist working with him.

Looking back, the musical exposure he got as a young boy courtesy of his father’s CD shop in Lagos helped. He listened to a lot of music from different genres and learnt of stagecraft from his father who doubled up as an MC. The different sounds and cultures in the song made him love music more. They also expanded his wit in music-making.

At 21, he has had a lot of success and the enchanting Crayon has a simple mantra. He never gets too comfortable. He is always hungry to achieve more success and he knows it never comes when you are in your comfort zone. He knows that history can be cruel to lazy people and instrumental to those who are overzealous.
