About Omawumi

While there are many stories to tell about Delta State, one beautiful tale is that this is the birthplace of Nigerian singer Omawumi. She was born on April 13, 1982, and attended Nana Primary School and later studied at the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. She would later graduate with a law degree from Ambrose Alli University in 2005. She relocated to Port Harcourt and worked at her family’s law firm O.S Megbele & Associates for a while.

In 2007, her passion for music became bolder and auditioned for the 2007 West African version of the TV talent franchise Idols West Africa. She was voted first runner-up in the competition because of her powerful and enchanting voice, as well as her dazzling demeanour. Although she could have stopped there, she continued with the creation of her debut album ‘Wonder Woman’. She released it via OMA Records in 2009 and it was received with unwavering power and might. Her decision to mix a wide range of influences into the album's musical pallet, such as Afro-pop, jazz, Funk and even techno was universally applauded.

‘Wonder Woman’ informed Omawumi’s Soul, R&B and Afro-pop fusion which are her mainstay genres. Omawumi started her acting career in 2009. She was a young actress, in production of V-Monolugues, a play exploring the numerous oppressions that African women experience. She then appeared on a Nigerian musical drama ‘Inhale’ in 2010. Then, in 2013, she released her second album ‘Lasso of Truth’. She named it after the weapon of the DC Superhero which she sang about in her first album ‘Wonder Woman’.

With a wide spectrum of styles and sounds, the album was once again lauded for its socially conscious lyrics, which dealt with everything from racism to gun control to the environment. On the song "Warn Yourself," WizKid, another Nigerian singer/songwriter, appeared. In 2017, Cabal Entertainment, a subsidiary of Roc Nation Africa released her third album, ‘Timeless’. The album was unique in the sense that it was not tied down to any single genre or trend.

Omawumi then released her fourth album ‘In Her Feelings’ in 2019. It was an Afro-fusion and Jazz to R&B feature. She followed it up with a sizzling single ‘Lituation’ in 2020. She dropped her fourth studio album Love Deep High Life (LDHL) featuring acts from Ric Hassani, Brymo, Waje and Phyno. The album is an emotionally charged, self-assured record that reminds listeners just why this Afro-fusion queen is one of music's most endearing voices. The entire album is dominated by love which she is intentional about. She says she did the album as a way to express herself, how she feels and much so to serenade her husband Yusuf with whom she tied the knots with in 2018.

Her secret to remaining in the game for a decade is straightforward. She flows with the tide and speaks about different things when need be. It is not an easy fete though. All in all, she remains one of Africa's top live acts. An Omawumi set is inclusive and content-heavy. On stage, there is dancing and laughter, all accompanied by her tremendous singing. When it comes to stagecraft, she's the best. She has performed with some of the biggest names in music, including Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone & Donell Jones, Angelique Kidjo, 2Face Idibia, M.I., P Square, and many others.
