EXCLUSIVE KENYA: Why it May Not Be Rainbows and Sunshine for Skiza Artists Just Yet

Kenyan artists had all but began celebrating the release of the court ordering the release of the Skiza Tunes royalties but according to the new information that Mdundo has uncovered, we’ve learned that the artists celebrations may well be premature.

We spoke to one of the Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) directors (who wishes to remain unidentified) who revealed that because of delays in the case pending in court, the judge had ordered that artists receive their Skiza royalties which had remained unpaid for the better part of a year now as an interim solution while the case is determined in court.

However some artists still remain unhappy with the situation and have again moved to court to block the payment of the Skiza royalties.

“We are almost there but not yet because of some case that came up recently where two more artists again went to court to stop the payment,” said the PRISK director.

“It is very unfortunate that two people can affect thousands of artists,” he added.

The two artists apparently went on and filed a case under a different court from the one with the pending case and their grievance is that they do not want CMOs to distribute the Skiza royalties.

“We’ve been having these problems, it’s a game being played to create delays and frustrations. Artists get frustrated and they get cornered to a place they’ll take anything because of the frustration,” revealed the frustrated PRISK director.

At the end of the day, whether the new court case filed will affect the previous court’s decision to pay artist as they await for the ruling, is now a matter of wait and see. Till then we shall keep you updated.
