Success Tips: Refigahs Words Of Wisdom On How To Be A Great Artist

Success is not in short supply in the music industry; it is open to all artists but only to those who are willing to work for it. So how then does an upcoming artist draw success to themselves and become the full package? I had the chance to talk to talk to Grandpa Records CEO Refigah as he enlightened me on some basic points that artists need to take into consideration before getting into the music industry

1. Be ready to put in work
Many artists in the industry currently are very lazy, because according to them they think that just because they record a single, its automatically going to become a hit and they will make it to the top no matter how good or bad the song is; then after the song flops they head out and start complaining that radio stations are not playing their music what they don’t understand is that radio stations are trying to retain their listeners.
Do not be lazy, when we were starting out as artists during my time we had no airplay whatsoever because playing local music was associated with being ‘shady’ and we had to perform at clubs for free for as long as I can remember and we never gave up. Success is never instant it takes time.

2. Enjoy the competitive process
Many of upcoming artists do not enjoy the competitive process. As a label several times we run talent search competitions and we anticipate seeing many artists showing up but they never do then the next day they start making calls asking to be given a chance but really some things can never be redone, most of this artists just love short cuts and the blame game. Everything is about trying and giving it your best you will never get what you do not deserve so work hard for it and you will eventually see the fruits of your labour.

3. Learn to free your mind
Many upcoming artists tend to be very bitter and feel like established artists in the industry have been in the industry so long and that’s why they are not getting their shot at success; and for most of this artists they have so many challenges within themselves that they need to overcome before they can get into the industry. They need to learn to free their mind and be open to situations.
I’ll give an example Kalamashaka were upcoming artists before they became established and when they were established, Nameless was still an upcoming artist somewhere. Do you know how many clubs nameless had to perform for free before he finally made it? I always ask some of this artist who was Willy Paul 2 years ago? No one knew of him but now it’s a totally different thing.
So why don’t you believe that people show up in the industry and rise, it is a cycle so be free and open to it.

4. Learn to Focus
Many upcoming artists have a victim mentality, that is they always play victim and blame everybody for their failure but what they need to do is focus, keep on trying till they find their own style.
If you listen to a new Wyre song on radio now it’s easy for you to identify him, Kenrazy same thing, Jua Cali, same thing with Jaguar. Before going to the studio, find yourself as an artist.

5. Change Your Mind set On Things
Most upcoming artists complain that radio stations do not play their music but we are in the new generation where you no longer need radio to make it. Make sure as an artist you record music that has valuable content in it and once you have this people who will like it will share it with their friends on whatssup and social media.
So do not be so stuck up on complaining and saying how things do not work for you, just change your perception on things.
