KENYAN_CLOTH-TALK: WHAT GIVES OCTOPIZZO EDGE

Many months ago a popular deejay cum producer, Dj Khaled, gave a interview on New York's Hot 97 radio on why he is made of a special cloth and soon "cloth talk" phrase became widely used when referring to certain people who are deemed to possess special abilities. That is what comes to mind whenever I think of Kenyan Hip Hop Octipizzo. He has, over time, earned different accolades...enough to justify my assertion.

HANDLING OF BUSINESS
In showbiz, controversies sell but it takes smart artists to use it as a tool and get to accrue benefits. From his "August Alsina saga" to his way of giving conspiracy theorists something to talk about, Octipizzo has always been more strategic than tactical in drawing public attention and creating interest in his music, which is also good too. He seems to understand that it's no longer just an issue of good music alone that makes a successful musician. With proper promoted releases, his two albums, especially the last one, LDPC, were a success. His merchandise products get actual consumers and he gets bookings to events.

BRANDING
Octopizzo understands the concept of artist branding and is one of the few rappers to maintain a decent website and is active on social media engaging fans with content that is, in most cases, inspiring. If you are a keen follower, you will get to realize that almost everything about this artist is unique, from his dressing, live performances, music release strategy and even music. As his fan, you know what to expect and this helps him retain fans over time.

UNDERSTANDING OF CORE AUDIENCE
This is one Hip Hop artist who understands how to to go about this music business. He was able to get himself a following early in his backyard, Kibera. Though he has since moved away, he's still much involved with the residents. When Madonna came to Kenya and posted on social media that Kibera residents are drinking sewage-contaminared water, he was quick to react to this falsehood. Such kind of attitude assures him of support from the largest slum in the world.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
He has been involved with humanitarian activities within Kibera using his foundation. Inasmuch as it may appear as a strategic move to align himself with NGOs which in return gives him more opportunities, he actually provides better opportunities for others. Take for example his " refugeenius" project which is providing refugees that are creative with a platform to express their art and they are releasing an album soon.
