Artist of the day: Jua Cali

Born in September 1979 in Eastlands Nairobi, Paul Julius Nunda aka Jua Cali is no unfamiliar name to any music fan around, and his interest in music is dated back to his primary school days at Ainsworth Primary School when he was just 10 years old.

His interest in music was taken a step further when his elder brother encouraged him to pursue a career in music prompting him to team up with his close friend Jemmoh to form band called 'Sita Futi' which disbanded after a short time with the other members getting into other careers.

After completing his high school at Jamhuri high School, the talented rapper came together with his childhood friend Clemmo and together started Calif Records that quickly became a hit label gaining prominence in the East African region.

Jua Cali together with Nonini invented 'Genge music', and he released his first track 'Ruka' in 2001 which quickly became a hit in Nairobi.

In 2004, he collaborated with Pilipili and did 'Kamata Dame' which pushed his credentials and that of Calif records to new heights.

His influence and prominence was fast being felt in the music industry and In August 2007, he was named amongst the top 100 most influential people in Kenya by the Standard newspaper.

Like many Kenyan artists it took Jua Cali several years to release his debut album “Juacali Sekta” which was hit the stores in 2006, since then the star has gone on to release two more albums 'Ngeli Ya Genge' in 2008 and 'TuGenge Yajayo' in 2013.

He is undoubtedly one of the pioneer of the Kenyan music scene and we salute him for his dedication and determination in bringing up many upcoming artists in the country.
