Who is Cardi B?

Cardi B is a multi-award-winning American rapper and singer. She ranks among the most successful female artists in Hip-hop and R&B genres across the world. Before venturing into the music industry, Cardi B was a movie star. She gained popularity on the internet after starring in the American reality TV show dubbed Love & Hip Hop: New York.

Her music journey and breakthrough
Cardi B kicked off her music career in 2015 after she was featured by Jamaican artist Shaggy in the remix of his song ‘Boom Boom’ alongside Popcaan. A year later, the rapper released her first official project dubbed ‘Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1’. She went ahead to release a continuation of the mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2, at the beginning of 2017.

Atlantic Records signed Cardi B shortly after releasing her second mixtape. A few months later, the rapper got two nominations at the 2017 BET Awards under; Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist categories. Although she did not win the awards, the nominations shone a spotlight on her.

She released her first single, ‘Bodak Yellow’, under Atlantic Records shortly after the BET Awards. The song went viral and shot the singer into the limelight. Not only did the song make it to The Billboard Hot 100, but also made it to the number one position.

In 2018, she released her debut album dubbed “Invasion of Privacy”. The album broke records on Billboard Hot 100 and made Cardi B a superstar. With the album out, the singer had earned a seat at the high table of respected names in Hip-Hop. “Invasion of Privacy” entered the list of the most streamed albums from a female artist at the time.

Cardi B’s star continued brightening with almost every project that she touched turned into a major hit song. While still decorating headlines with her debut album, Cardi B got featured by Marron 5 in their record-breaking song ‘Girls Like You’ in 2018. The song saw Card B become one of the few rappers who continuously dominated the Billboard charts.

Still in 2018 while flying high with songs such as ‘Taki Taki; in which she was featured by DJ Snake, the rapper made headlines after receiving 12 nominations at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. Out of the 12 nominations, she won in three categories.

The Hip Hop star also dominated the 61st Grammy Awards where she received five nominations, and Billboard music awards where she received 21 nominations.

In 2020, Cardi B released ‘WAP’ featuring Mega Thee Stallion as the first song in her second studio album. ‘WAP’ went viral globally and propelled the rapper to the top of the Billboard charts.

At the beginning of 2021, she released the second song, ‘Up’, off the album. In the same year, the Grammy-award-winning rapper while on a vacation in Nigeria set the internet ablaze after claiming that she wanted to acquire its citizenship.
